We love babies :

  • A special award every year
  • to encourage families to the Shire and highlight what a terrific place to live it is in Central Goldfields
  • All newborns in 2025 (or January 2026!) are presented with their medal by our Shire Mayor on stage after our citizenship ceremony on the Australia Day holiday, 26 January
  • Need to register – just go onto our website www.centralgoldfields.vic.gov.au
  • If you know someone who’s had a baby recently, and they live in our Shire, make sure they register and come along to get their medal
  • It’s a wonderful day with activities for all ages, free breakfast and BBQ

Start reading early:

  • Encouraging young children to develop a love of reading
  • We’ve worked hard improve literacy
  • the Mayor and Deputy Mayor present free reader-books to 3 and 4 year olds
  • The idea is to encourage pre-school reading
  • Even more important these days with all of the electronic devices taking over their attention
  • To have a free book presented to your toddler on the Australia Day public holiday, simply go to our website and register

Recent heatwave:

  • We had some really challenging conditions
  • Wound back some services and closed others
  • also prepare for the worst – getting ready to open an evacuation centre for example – to support Castlemaine at one stage
  • Most of roadwork machinery like water tankers, our graders and other equipment was on stand by for the CFA
  • We were planning carefully with all of the state and surrounding local councils
  • Fortunately we were spared, but we did have very serious incidents nearby
  • We’re reviewing some things –
  • likely to be more heatwaves soon
  • crews are working on the roads again
  • tried out our new “Cool Spaces” plan
  • very thankful to the volunteers and emergency responders who kept us safe
